What is JUVÉDERM®?
JUVÉDERM® is an injectable dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid. While all variations in the JUVÉDERM® family typically involve very minimal treatment discomfort, some products contain a topical numbing agent (lidocaine) designed to further enhance patient comfort during injection. JUVÉDERM® comes in varying degrees of enhancement, with each product differing in its cross-linking properties and concentrations of hyaluronic acid. Depending on the type of JUVÉDERM® filler used, the injectable can be used to smooth and soften wrinkles, as well as fill in cheeks, “marionette lines,” or nasolabial folds. JUVÉDERM® is also commonly utilized in lip augmentation to non-surgically plump up the lips for a more youthful and sensual appearance.
JUVÉDERM® Products
JUVÉDERM® XC
If you struggle with parentheses wrinkles (nasolabial folds), marionette lines, or other deep facial creases, JUVÉDERM® XC can be a simple and highly effective way to diminish the prominence of these wrinkles and attain a younger-looking appearance almost instantly. The perioral wrinkles around the mouth, commonly known as “smoker’s lines,” can also be improved with JUVÉDERM® XC. This filler is often used to smooth moderate to severe lines on the face for results that can last up to a year with optimal treatment.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC
Designed for subtle additions of volume to the cheeks, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC can provide exceptional results in midfacial enhancement and augmentation. As the natural aging process causes volume deficits in the cheeks, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC can be used to create more visible cheek contours and improve facial fullness that is characteristic of youth. Results of treatment have been known to last one to two years in some cases.
JUVÉDERM VOLLURE® XC
JUVÉDERM VOLLURE® XC is FDA-approved to diminish the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, such as the nasolabial folds. These creases extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth and are usually a prominent sign of facial aging. JUVÉDERM VOLLURE® XC can be used to fill in these lines with natural-looking volume for a more rejuvenated look that can last up to 18 months.
JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC
For individuals seeking a method of non-surgical lip enhancement, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC can be an exceptional treatment to add fullness and volume to the lips for a younger-looking aesthetic that does not appear overdone. This variation in the JUVÉDERM® family is also commonly utilized to fill in vertical wrinkles around the mouth (perioral rhytids), or “smoker’s lines.” In this way, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC can reduce visible signs of aging around the mouth for results that have been shown to last up to one year in some cases.
Restylane® vs. JUVÉDERM®
Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® are both hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers designed to improve many of the same aesthetic concerns, such as parentheses wrinkles, marionette lines, hollow tear troughs, and sunken or flat facial planes. While the two injectables have more similarities than differences, there are a few distinctions between Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® treatment.
One primary point of contrast between the two dermal fillers is the consistency of each solution. JUVÉDERM® is a smooth-consistency gel that readily diffuses upon injection. There is typically no need to “work” or mold the solution into the treatment sites, as JUVÉDERM® is designed to spread into the desired area with ease. This can be ideal when treating the lips or “smoker’s lines,” as the gel’s ability to conform to the tissues once injected can produce a softer aesthetic. Restylane®, on the other hand, is more cohesive and tends to keep its shape once injected. This can provide more support in cases wherein a greater degree of “lift” is needed to achieve a patient’s cosmetic goals, including when hollow tear troughs, deep facial folds, or other areas with notable volume deficits are being filled in. It is also hypothesized that JUVÉDERM® can offer more enduring results than Restylane® due to the higher degree of cross-linked hyaluronic acid in the formulation; however, the longevity of the outcome achieved from any dermal filler ultimately depends more on the location of the injection, as well as the individual being treated, than the type of product used. Our facial plastic surgeons can help you decide which dermal filler is the best treatment to achieve the aesthetic you desire.
BOTOX® Cosmetic vs. JUVÉDERM®
Unlike the comparison with Restylane®, the differences between BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM® are much easier to delineate. While both are injectable products that can minimize facial aging, the two treatments are designed to address separate concerns. BOTOX® Cosmetic is intended to smooth dynamic wrinkles, which are lines caused by repetitive muscle movement. By temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause crow’s feet, frown lines, and brow creases, BOTOX® Cosmetic can smooth expression wrinkles and achieve a more youthful appearance. In contrast, JUVÉDERM® is designed to reduce signs of age by restoring volume in flat cheeks, under-eye hollows, and temples, as well as filling in marionette lines and parentheses wrinkles. Ultimately, BOTOX® Cosmetic works as a neuromodulator while JUVÉDERM® is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that can be used for volume enhancement in addition to wrinkle reduction.
Are There Any Side Effects From JUVÉDERM®?
The most common reactions from JUVÉDERM® are temporary swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection sites, which usually resolve on their own soon after treatment. These effects usually do not warrant any recovery period or downtime. Ice packs or over-the-counter medication can typically manage any discomfort until the side effects subside.
Does JUVÉDERM® Hurt?
Most patients report little to no discomfort from JUVÉDERM® injections. However, if preferred, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the targeted area(s) before treatment to further enhance patient comfort. Some JUVÉDERM® products already include lidocaine in the formulation, a local anesthetic used to numb the injection site.
Treatment with JUVÉDERM®
Using a fine needle, JUVÉDERM® is injected into targeted regions of the face to fill wrinkles and fine lines, or add volume and contour to the lips and cheeks. The entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, depending on the number of treatment areas. JUVÉDERM® provides results that are almost instantaneous and there is generally no downtime after the procedure– meaning you can typically resume your daily routine right after you leave our office. Although you may experience some degree of mild bruising and swelling after JUVÉDERM® injections, this should dissipate within a few days.
How Long Does JUVÉDERM® Last?
In general, the aesthetic outcomes provided by JUVÉDERM® typically allow a smoother look and feel that can last anywhere from six to nine months. The rejuvenating effects from certain JUVÉDERM® products have even been known to last one year or more for longer-lasting results. The outcome from JUVÉDERM® can be maintained with occasional “touch-up” treatments and ultimately work wonders for facial feature augmentation and rejuvenation of deep wrinkles and fine lines. During a consultation, Dr. Kriet or Dr. Humphrey will help you determine which JUVÉDERM® filler can be the most effective for your aesthetic concerns and treatment goals.
Is JUVÉDERM® Safe?
JUVÉDERM® injections are considered a very safe non-surgical treatment when administered by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon or certified nurse injector. As the solution is composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in the body, there is generally no risk of an allergic reaction from JUVÉDERM® unless you have previously had a negative reaction to filler products or lidocaine. Your injector will ask you about your medical history to help determine whether JUVÉDERM® treatment is appropriate for you.
How Much Does JUVÉDERM® Cost?
The cost of dermal filler treatment with JUVÉDERM® varies from patient to patient, with the ultimate expense depending on how much solution is needed to achieve your cosmetic goals, the severity of the concerns addressed, and the area of treatment. In general, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) lists the national average cost of hyaluronic acid-based filler treatment in 2017 as roughly $650. However, this does not account for variations across different geographic locations or respective plastic surgeons.
