JUVÉDERM®

JUVÉDERM® is one of the most popular dermal fillers in the nation. This minimally invasive enhancement option can be extremely effective for adding volume and contour to facial features, as well as for diminishing common signs of facial aging.

The University of Kansas Health System offers JUVÉDERM for those who want to restore the youthful characteristics of their skin without the need for surgery or downtime. The JUVÉDERM family of fillers is known for long-lasting results and flexibility in addressing a variety of aesthetic concerns.

What is JUVÉDERM?

JUVÉDERM is an injectable dermal filler comprised of hyaluronic acid. While all variations in the JUVÉDERM family typically involve very minimal treatment discomfort, some products contain a topical numbing agent (lidocaine) designed to further ensure comfort during injection.

JUVÉDERM offers various degrees of enhancement, with each product differing in its cross-linking properties and concentrations of hyaluronic acid. Depending on the type of JUVÉDERM filler used, the injectable can be used to smooth and soften wrinkles, as well as fill in cheeks, marionette lines or nasolabial folds (laugh lines). JUVÉDERM is also commonly used in lip augmentation to nonsurgically plump the lips for a more youthful appearance.

Who can have JUVÉDERM?

The people who are likely to see the best results from JUVÉDERM have realistic expectations about their outcome and are in good overall health. The JUVÉDERM family of injectable fillers can help improve many common appearance concerns, including thin lips, age-related volume loss, deep wrinkles and more. During your consultation, you can talk with your injector about your ideal outcome and find out if JUVÉDERM is right for you.

How does JUVÉDERM work?

JUVÉDERM injections are designed to add volume to facial tissue. With age, the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen declines, which leads to volume loss and deep wrinkles. The hyaluronic acid in JUVÉDERM restores plumpness, smoothing away wrinkles and adding volume.

Types of JUVÉDERM

JUVÉDERM comes in different formulations depending on your specific needs:

  • JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler specially formulated to reduce vertical wrinkles around the mouth (perioral rhytids) and add fullness to the lips. A recent addition to the JUVÉDERM family of injectable products, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA XC is unique in that it provides smoother, longer-lasting results than other injectable products used for lip enhancement.

  • JUVÉDERM VOLLURE® XC is the longest lasting dermal filler. Specifically designed to address the nasolabial folds, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE XC can produce results that last up to 18 months. The JUVÉDERM VOLLURE® XC formula delivers firm volume that adequately fills lines and creases, moving flexibly with facial expressions for a natural-looking result.

  • JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is a thick-consistency hyaluronic acid gel customized for deep injection volume restoration applications. Compared to other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers in the JUVÉDERM family, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC has a thicker consistency that delivers long-lasting volume to lift the midface to a more youthful position.

  • JUVÉDERM® XC can be used to minimize parentheses wrinkles (nasolabial folds), marionette lines, or other deep facial creases. The perioral wrinkles around the mouth, commonly known as “smoker’s lines,” can also be improved with JUVÉDERM® XC. This filler is often used to smooth moderate to severe lines on the face for results that can last up to a year with optimal treatment.

Benefits and risks of JUVÉDERM

JUVÉDERM can help plump deep wrinkles and fill in facial hollows so that you look younger and more refreshed. Treatments are fast, discrete and highly effective. Men and women who receive JUVÉDERM injections are able to attain a younger-looking appearance almost instantly, without surgery.

The most common reactions from JUVÉDERM are temporary swelling, bruising or redness at the injection sites, which usually resolve on their own soon after treatment. These effects usually do not warrant any recovery period or downtime. Ice packs or over-the-counter medication can typically manage any discomfort until the side effects subside.

What happens during JUVÉDERM injections?

Using a fine needle, JUVÉDERM is injected into targeted regions of the face to fill wrinkles and fine lines or add volume and contour to the lips and cheeks. The entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, depending on the number of treatment areas. JUVÉDERM provides results that are almost instantaneous and there is generally no downtime after the procedure. You can typically resume your daily routine right after you leave our office. Although you may experience some degree of mild bruising and swelling after JUVÉDERM injections, this should dissipate within a few days.

JUVÉDERM FAQ

  • JUVÉDERM results can last anywhere from 6-9 months or longer, depending on the formula used. The rejuvenating effects from certain JUVÉDERM products have even been known to last 1 year or more. The outcome from JUVÉDERM can be maintained with occasional touch-up treatments.

  • JUVÉDERM injections are considered very safe when administered by a qualified injector. Because it is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, there is little risk of an allergic reaction from JUVÉDERM unless you have previously had a negative reaction to filler products or lidocaine. Your injector will ask you about your medical history to help determine whether JUVÉDERM treatment is right for you.

  • Most people report little to no discomfort from JUVÉDERM injections. However, if preferred, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the targeted area(s) before treatment. Some JUVÉDERM products already include lidocaine in the formulation, a local anesthetic used to numb the injection site.

  • Restylane® and JUVÉDERM are both hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers designed to improve many of the same aesthetic concerns. The main difference between the 2 dermal fillers is the consistency of each solution.

    • JUVÉDERM is a smooth-consistency gel that readily diffuses upon injection. There is typically no need to “work” or mold the solution into the treatment sites, as JUVÉDERM is designed to spread into the desired area with ease. This can be ideal when treating the lips or “smoker’s lines,” as the gel’s ability to conform to the tissues once injected can produce a softer aesthetic.
    • Restylane is more cohesive and tends to keep its shape once injected. This can provide more support in cases wherein a greater degree of “lift” is needed to achieve a patient’s cosmetic goals, including in hollow tear troughs, deep facial folds or other areas with notable volume deficits. Our specialists can help you decide which dermal filler is best to achieve the aesthetic you want.
  • While both BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM are injectable products that can minimize facial aging, the 2 treatments are designed to address separate concerns.

    • BOTOX Cosmetic is intended to smooth dynamic wrinkles, which are lines caused by repetitive muscle movement. By temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause crow’s feet, frown lines and brow creases, BOTOX Cosmetic can smooth expression wrinkles and achieve a more youthful appearance.
    • JUVÉDERM is designed to reduce signs of age by restoring volume in flat cheeks, under-eye hollows and temples, as well as filling in marionette lines and parentheses wrinkles.

Ultimately, BOTOX Cosmetic works as a neuromodulator while JUVÉDERM is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that can be used for volume enhancement in addition to wrinkle reduction.
