Ear Correction (Otoplasty)

Prominent or irregularly-shaped ears can often lead to teasing and and make children feel self-conscious. Dr. J. David Kriet and Dr. Clinton D. Humphrey offer ear surgery (otoplasty) at our Kansas City and Overland Park-area practice to help both children and adults reduce the appearance of large ears to improve facial harmony.

Ear pinning surgery is typically performed in children at least 5 years old. The procedure can be performed in adolescents or adults of any age. Surgery begins with an incision hidden in the natural skin crease behind the ear. A small amount of skin is removed and then the cartilage is reshaped. Ear pinning surgery at our Kansas City facility generally takes about two hours.

After otoplasty, the ears will be bandaged in soft dressings for a few days, after which a headband will be recommended at night for several weeks after surgery. Normal daily routines can usually be resumed after about one week; however, patients are cautioned to avoid strenuous activities for three to four weeks. Discomfort after otoplasty is typically mild.

Otoplasty (ear surgery) from our Kansas City plastic surgeons can correct prominent ears and enhance self-esteem. Please contact our practice for more information on ear surgery, or to schedule a consultation.
